Travel Book: Berlin, Krakow

March 16, 2009 by charlis87

So as i am back in Austria for one more semester, i decided to write my travel book of February where i left Paris went to Austria and then went to Berlin and to finish to Krakow.

Paris

As Paris is the city where i currently do my studies except this year because of my exchange there was nothing of very particular going back except that it was nice to see family and friends.

Berlin

Day 1

As i arrived in Austria early in the morning i looked on the internet, and saw that a train was leaving my little city of steyr at 7h15 after arriving a 6h30, i then decided to jump in the train and go. I took the train to linz, then took the ICE of German Deutchbahn train which was really nice, i then arrived in Mannheim where i had to change trains to go to Berlin, i had to take a very small local train to Berlin. The train was really great, the people on the train nice and friendly. I then arrived in Berlin after a 5 h 10 min train ride, and the first thing who really surprised me about Berlin was how clean the station was. I then decided to go to a tourist information point and booked a hostel, the all in hostel, which is really great, new, friendly people, really a great address. I took the S Bahn train or quick train from the Optbanhof to the next stop near alexanderplatz. Once arrived there i was in East Berlin, everything there was really cool and i really loved it. The first thing that shocked me in Berlin was the fact that everyone drank beer and that there were beer shops every hundred meter to sell you a fresh beer “and you better know what you want or if no you will spend hours because of a very wide choise (about 100 beers there).

Once i arrived in my hostel i put all of my stuff down, then decided to go and visit Berlin a little bit to see how it was, i then realized that i was in the club district, as it was Monday night not much was going on, because either everyone was parted out or did not have to much money, after going in the club matrix and noticing that there was really no one i then decided to go home and sleep.

Day 2

The next morning i got up at 8 o’clock after going to bed at 2, i then took a day pass for the Bahn, which was 6 euros, i took also a 0.60 euros coffee, which was really nice to wake up, once i had all of this i decided to go and visit Berlin, i started by going to go and see the reichstag or the chancellery which was really nice and cool, mixing modern and old, it was really a nice place, then i took the 100 bus to Potsdamer platz which was the symbol of segregation between east and west Berlin, but today it is very modern. I went to go and see the charly check point which is really well preserved, and then i saw the artifacts of the Berlin wall, if you go to Berlin and do not see this you are simply an idiot, because it is really worth seeing, the wall is about 5 meters high, it is so impressive! For lunch i ate a wonderful burger king, after this i saw the Brandburger gate which is really nice and great. I saw the rathauss or castle of the Maire, which is really a nice place, and in front of the Rathaus i saw the tower TV which has become the simbol of Berlin, it is so impressive ! After seeing the major tourist sights i wanted to see where was the bunker of Hitler, after asking to several people who told me different thing i finally found it, it is REALLY NOT well advertise which i can understand, the place where the bunker is located is a big embassy district which i taught was somewhat weird for a historicall place like this. And to finish with Berlin that night before leaving i saw the tower with the golden lady on top, and then before leaving i went to Alexanderplatz to have a coffee and see the people there !

That night i left for Krakow, from Berlin-Lichtenberg to Krakow Golvny which was a 12h trip!

Day 3

I arrived in Krakow at 9 O’clock sharp, as i was taking the train to Krakow i talked to people who told me that even if i was in Krakow for the day i had to go and see Auschwitz. During the trip i was meditating this idea.

I arrived the next morning at 9 am, i then saw Krakow who is really a breathtaking city, it is really SO nice, as soon as i arrived i went to the Mc Donalds to go and eat my 1 Euro Breakfast, which was really nice, a fell breakfust for one euro, welcome to Poland ! I saw the main square in Krakow, went in the church in the main square which is really wonderful, i saw the old Jewish district, and the Hill where there is the Krakow castlle which is called Wavel hill, what really surprised me in Krakow was the number of students there, it is really a student city. After seeing pretty much of Krakow that morning i then decide to go to Auschwitz !

Auschwitz

I took the train at noon, the train was really a bad train, it was not clean, the people a bit strange for me westerner, but this does not bother me i have to deal with it, i took the train for an hour out of Krakow and arrived in the little city of Oswiecim, which is really a small city like there is all over the world. There is not much to see in this city, what really surprised me there is how unclean everything was, i then was talking to people going to the memorial and soon after i noticed that one person was french, it was funny to meet a french in Poland!

Arriving in the memorial

I arrived in the memorial and i was really shocked because when you are there everything is really clean and well kept, the strange part about it is that you feel like you are in a university in America, i was really surprised by this, everything there was really well explained and it was really well explained, it was quite sad but i do not regret going, because going there makes you understand how life is really valuable.

After leaving Auschwitz i then went back to Krakow where i revisited Krakow for 4 hours, i saw again all the things i had seen in the morning, it was really really cool, enjoying my last moments in Krakow and then i took the train back to Vienna, it was really nice because the train take 7 hours to go back to Vienna!

And when i was back in Vienna this was the end of my wonderful trip around Europe.

Hope you enjoyed reading this.
